We have been installing industrial style aluminium internal doors around Norfolk and Suffolk for a few years now. We have noticed the trend is on the increase, and we are totally here for it!
Of all the amazing home transformations we see from day to day, the art deco-style internal door installations have so much impact. They can completely change the feel of a home, offering a practical solution to dividing a space without sacrificing light, space or style.
So what’s the deal with industrial steel-look internal doors?
The trend originally emerged during the late 19th Century, when factories and eventually cottages were furnished with steel-framed windows. These frames were so strong and hard-wearing that UK government housing schemes used them in cottages right up until the 1980s.
The art deco/ modernist era, spearheaded by the Crittal brand and their now classic, black framed steel bar windows, partitions and doors, is where the trend really took off. Their elegant, slim sightlines and simple geometric design became cemented with the style we still love today.
Eventually, uPVC gained ground and steel fell out of favour, but recently the trend has re-emerged. Supercharged by cheaper, lighter, easier to care for aluminium, the ‘steel look’ is well and truly back, and glass panelled doors and room dividers, typically seen in industrial settings during the art deco era, are now adorning the most Instagrammable of rooms.
And we have a feeling the trend is here to stay. Here’s why:
Heavy duty but elegant
Somehow these doors manage to perfectly straddle the ‘form over function’ issue. They are extremely strong – a nod to their industrial roots – and even act as fire doors, but the frames are slim and stylish.
Available in any RAL colour
Typically we see these interior doors and partitions in black or charcoal colourways, but the sky (or the RAL colour spectrum…) really is the limit when it comes to your colour options. This is perfect if you are wishing to colour-match or create something really unique for your home.
Provides an effective acoustic barrier
The 8mm toughened glass and solid aluminium frames provide a fantastic acoustic barrier – perfect for sectioning off a home office area, or dividing a noisy kitchen from a relaxing living space. Open-plan living is wonderful, but quiet spaces are still a super valuable element in a home!
So much light!
It’s a room partition, but it won’t block out natural light. This is ideal for long, narrow properties such as terraces which can be tricky to divide without the space becoming dark and poky, and also looks amazing in larger properties where natural light is in abundance.
Fire proof and compliant with UK fire regulations
