If you have had your double-glazed windows for over 10 years or are concerned about their aesthetics, energy efficiency or performance, it might be time to replace them. In our experience, double-glazed windows have a lifespan of 15-20 years, and, with the right maintenance can achieve a lifespan of up to 30.
So what are the signs to look out for that your double-glazed windows need replacing?
Ok, so we have all seen an increase in our energy bills lately, but if you find yourself reaching for the thermostat more often than you used to, it’s possible that your double glazing isn’t performing as efficiently as it should. This can be caused by deteriorated seals allowing heat to escape during winter and warm air to enter during summer. Our windows can take quite a beating from the elements, such as wind and rain or even climbing plants such as ivy, which can infiltrate brickwork around your window frames, causing them to degrade over time.
Condensation between the panes of your double glazing indicates a breakdown of the window seal. While this kind of condensation may not greatly impact the performance of your windows, it can look unsightly and affect the overall appeal of your home. If your double glazing has condensation issues and curb appeal matters to you, it’s time to get your windows replaced.
In 2022 it became mandatory for all new and replacement windows to be fitted with trickle vents. Without proper ventilation (known as ‘background ventilation’), moisture can gather on your windows and other surfaces, causing damp and mould issues. If this is a problem in your home, new windows with trickle vents could be the answer.
Feeling cold draughts around your windows, even when they’re closed, is a strong sign that the seals on your windows are no longer providing adequate insulation. This can make your home uncomfortable and increase your heating (or cooling!) costs. Draughts can be caused by gaps in the sealant around your windows, as well as issues with locking mechanisms which can prevent you from achieving an efficient seal. More importantly, failing locking mechanisms will invalidate your insurance should you have a break-in – if this is an issue in your home, get it sorted ASAP.
Look for visible signs of damage, such as cracks, scratches, or mould on the window frames, panes or seals.
If your double glazing is old-fashioned or doesn’t complement your home’s aesthetic, replacing it can significantly enhance your property’s curb appeal and value. Modern double-glazing options offer a wide range of styles, colours, and finishes to suit any taste from classic casement windows to slimmer heritage styles such as uPVC Flush and vertical sliding windows.
